Welcome to the genealogical home of the MacFarlaine family here on the web…  Descended from William MacFarlane who travelled to India in the 1770s.

William had two sons George & Matthew both of whom added our little extra letter I which makes us so unique supposedly it’s to denote India.

Whatever the truth it’s the way you can be sure that we are all one big family who went to India.

Back in Scotland we lived in an area near Loch Lomond and when gathering for battle (or raids) met at a smaller loch close by named Loch Sloy. Our clan motto is ‘this I’ll defend’

    1. Hi Vivienne, it’s a really interesting point. A change made 200 years ago resulted in this ‘new’ surname but truthfully almost all surnames in the UK are versions or corruptions of other words or names so I think there are very few surnames which are the same now as they may have been 500 years ago.

In terms of recognition by the clan that is MacFarlane I don’t know other than a quick look shows that there have also been many other corruptions which are happily accepted from Mac to Mc from Lane to Land from Far to Par etc. Even the surname Pope seemingly simple with just 4 letters has been corrupted over time to Paip, Pape, Paipe & Popp.
